Many among the local community seek shortcuts, prioritizing their own safety and self-preservation rather than considering others. This is due to a limited breadth of heart, as they are driven by instinct to focus solely on themselves and their immediate families' needs.
Limited breadth of heart means having a small emotional range that does not allow someone to feel for others outside their close circle. People who are in survival mode focus only on themselves and their own safety, and because of this, they do not see the larger community. This narrow emotional space keeps them from understanding that the health of the whole group is what really protects them in the end, keeping them stuck in a place where they think only about themselves and for the moment.
A society that places its primary emphasis on the safety and preservation of its members, without regard for others, has not yet fully embraced the true meaning of social existence. This is a paradox in a country where the social spirit runs so deep and is widely known for its tolerance, in addition to possessing such traditional wisdom as tepo seliro.
The question remains: why does fear still live here, prompting people to live as if they are alone, acting out a scenario in which their environment has lost concern? Such individualism may indicate that even in this land of tepo seliro, the forces of modern survival or economic peril have begun to undermine the trust that binds us so closely. When threatened, the instinct for personal self-preservation takes precedence over any social bond, turning what could be a collective solidarity into an isolated individualism. Returning to these ancient teachings is not just desirable but necessary to change this instinct back from individual fear into a communal strength.
