Dipantara’s background in Working with Sustainable Forest Management

Background of Organization

Dipantara was founded by a group of forestry activists and practitioners who possess a strong scientific background and extensive experience, and are deeply committed to protecting and preserving forests, as stated in the Notary Deed of Muhammad Kamaludin Purnomo, SH, No. 09, dated April 22, 2006. However, the form of this institution will be upgraded to a small-scale business enterprise in the form of CV or PT.

To ensure legality, Dipantara first socializes its programs with potential partner farmer groups. This is followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Cooperation Agreement (SPKS). Each partner farmer must then provide legal proof of land ownership. Additionally, Dipantara maintains continuous communication with the Gunung Kidul Regency local government to secure recognition for its presence and role in the area.

Many farmers in Gunung Kidul own their land and independently plant hardwoods like teak (Jati) and other trees such as Sengon. Under the "Hutan Rakyat" (Community Forest) ownership model, these farmers have legal title to either their private forests or gardens. They then form farmer groups to collectively manage and sell their timber to potential buyers.

As a a small-scale enterprise that collaborates with farmers in Gunung Kidul. Collaboration with farmers is carried out through facilitating the operation by

  • Identifying markets that require a supply of wood from community-managed forests.
  • Purchasing harvested wood products from the farmers.
  • Marketing the products to the market.

Dipantara is dedicated to the use and conservation of community forests through collaborative, professional, and integrated efforts. The organization operates as a social enterprise, professionally blending entrepreneurial and social principles.

Dipantara helps forest farmers to manage forests in a responsible way to achieve sustainable forest management and use their timber by focusing on the marketing of teak wood.

Dipantara also offers other commodities, such as Sengon and other non-teak plants, to meet market demand.
